Responsible Gaming
Gambling should cost no more than any other evening out, and it should stop being fun before it starts costing something else. This page covers the warning signs, the controls every UK licensee must give you free of charge, and where to get real help — today, confidentially, at no cost.

1. Start with the maths
Every casino product carries a built-in mathematical advantage for the operator. It is called the house edge, it is not hidden, and it does not switch off. Over enough rounds it is the only outcome that is genuinely predictable.
That means the money you stake should be treated as the price of the entertainment, not as an investment. If it comes back, that is a good evening. If it does not, that was the cost — and it should be a cost you had already decided you could afford before you started.
Three things are true regardless of what anyone tells you: no system beats the house edge; a losing run does not make a win "due"; and nothing on this website — no score, no review, no ranking — improves your odds. We rate operators on how fairly and safely they treat customers, not on how likely you are to win, because that second thing is not something anyone can rate.
2. Warning signs worth taking seriously
Harm rarely arrives as a single dramatic moment. It usually accumulates. If several of the following are true for you, treat that as a signal — not as a character flaw:
- You gamble for longer, or with more, than you intended to — repeatedly.
- You chase losses, staking more to win back what has gone.
- You gamble with money set aside for rent, bills, food or debt repayments.
- You borrow, sell things, or use credit to fund gambling.
- You hide the extent of it from people close to you, or lie about it.
- You feel restless, anxious or irritable when you try to cut down.
- You gamble to escape stress, low mood, boredom or loneliness.
- It is affecting your work, sleep, studies or relationships.
- You have tried to stop before and could not.
- You feel relief when you gamble, rather than enjoyment.
None of this makes you weak or unusual. Gambling disorder is a recognised health condition, it is treatable, and treatment is available free on the NHS. The single most useful thing you can do is talk to someone about it sooner rather than later.
A quick self-check
BeGambleAware hosts a short, free, anonymous self-assessment that takes about two minutes and gives you a straight answer about your level of risk. It is a low-cost way to find out where you stand. Take the self-assessment ↗
3. The controls every UK licensee must give you
These are not favours. Under Gambling Commission licence conditions, every operator we review must provide them, free, and must act on them promptly. Set them at registration, while the numbers are still abstract — it is far harder to be honest with yourself after a losing session.
| Control | What it does | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Deposit limit | Caps how much you can pay in per day, week or month. Decreases apply immediately; increases must wait through a cooling-off period. | Always. Set one on day one. |
| Loss limit | Caps net losses over a period, regardless of how much you recycle. | When deposits alone do not reflect the real exposure. |
| Stake limit | Caps the maximum size of a single stake. | If your stakes creep upward during a session. |
| Reality check | Interrupts you at a set interval with how long you have been active and where you stand. | If sessions run longer than you notice. |
| Time-out | Locks your account for 24 hours up to 6 weeks. Cannot be reversed early. | When you need a short, firm break. |
| Self-exclusion | Closes your account with that operator for a minimum of 6 months and removes you from their marketing. | When you have decided to stop with that brand. |
| Marketing opt-out | Stops promotional email, SMS and push messages. | Immediately, if offers are a trigger for you. |
One of our six scoring pillars exists purely to check that these controls are present and reachable in under four taps. If an operator buries them, it loses marks.
4. GamStop — the national self-exclusion scheme
An operator-level self-exclusion only covers that one brand. GamStop covers all of them.
GamStop is the free national self-exclusion scheme for Great Britain. One registration blocks your access to every operator licensed by the Gambling Commission for a period you choose — six months, one year or five years — and every licensee is legally required to honour it. Registration takes a few minutes and needs only basic identifying details so that operators can match you.
It cannot be cancelled early. That is the point of it, and it is the feature that makes it work.
If your gambling is no longer a choice you feel you are making freely, this is the single most effective step available to you, and it is available right now.

6. Blocking software and bank controls
Self-exclusion works better with friction around it. Two practical layers:
- Bank gambling blocks. Most UK banks — including the major high-street names and the app-based banks — let you switch off gambling transactions on your card from within their app. Many apply a cooling-off delay before it can be switched back on. It is free, it takes about thirty seconds, and it is one of the most effective single steps available.
- Device blocking software. Tools such as Gamban, GAMBLOCK and BetBlocker restrict access to gambling websites and apps across your devices. BetBlocker is free and run by a registered charity, and Gamban is provided free to many UK residents through GambleAware funding.
7. If you are worried about someone else
Gambling harm rarely stops at one person. If someone close to you is affected:
- Choose a calm moment, and lead with concern rather than accusation.
- Do not pay off gambling debts directly — it very often extends the problem rather than ending it.
- Protect joint finances: separate accounts where sensible, and check your own credit file.
- Encourage GamStop registration and a bank-level block, and offer to sit with them while they do it.
- Get support for yourself. GamCare and GamAnon both support affected family members directly, and the National Gambling Helpline will talk to you as well as to the person gambling.
8. Protecting under-18s
Gambling is strictly for adults aged 18 or over, and gambling by anyone under 18 is a criminal offence in Great Britain. Every operator we review is legally required to verify age before accepting a deposit.
If you share a device with children:
- never save gambling account credentials or card details in a shared browser;
- use your operating system's parental controls and your browser's content filters;
- consider filtering software such as Net Nanny, Qustodio or CYBERsitter;
- use separate user profiles on any shared computer or tablet;
- talk to older children about the odds — an honest ten-minute conversation about the house edge is worth more than a block they will find a way around.
The only rule that always applies
If you are gambling money you cannot afford to lose, stop today and call 0808 8020 133. It is free, it is confidential, it is available right now, and the people answering have heard it all before. Nothing on this website — no review, no score, no offer — is more important than that.
